Where it all started…
My name is Rosemond Frett-Farrell, and my curiosity about the origins and meanings of our names was piqued as early as age four, when, in Sunday School, I first learned that biblical names have meaning. I was curious – what if my name is not biblical? Does my name still have a meeting? What is the meaning of my name?
By the time I was in high school I had started to investigate the meanings of names a little more seriously, but only as a hobby.
Fast forward a few years: I was working as a travel agent, deriving great joy from helping others plan their birthday and anniversary trips, honeymoons, and family retreats. It was a privilege to help my clients mark these special occasions with personalized vacations that would provide them a lifetime of memories. And of course, my career as a travel agent allowed me to visit many beautiful destinations and meet a variety of interesting people.
It was on one of those trips that I met a man named O’Farrell — he was the maitre d’ on our cruise, and we laughed at the fact that we had similar last names. After a lengthy discussion about the meanings of our first and last names I was reminded of my former hobby and wondered if I could turn it into a business. It seemed like a great way to offer people a personalized and memorable gift, much in the same way that my work as a travel agent did. Without access to a reliable, searchable database of names, origins, meanings, and personal traits, I wasn’t sure how I could bring it to fruition.
On a separate cruise, at a stop in Key West, I met the owner of a shop that sold items personalized with names. The shop owner shared some of her knowledge and resources with me, and I realized that the pieces were starting to fall into place. Here was a way my hobby could grow into a business that could bring joy to others, where I could create something unique and personal to help customers mark life’s special occasions.
